Folake Okediran
Folake was born in
Bethnal Green, London, on June 9, 1957 to a medical doctor father, Dr. Ambrose
Olowe, and a nursing sister mother, Mrs. Abike Olowe, both of blessed memory.
On her return to Nigeria, Folake was enrolled at the Mary Hill Convent School
Ibadan from where she went to Queen’s School Ibadan for her secondary school
education. She enrolled in the then University of Ife (Now Obafemi Awolowo
University, Ile-Ife) in 1975, and qualified as a lawyer in 1979.
After her one-year law
school programme at the Lagos Law School, Folake served during her National
Youth Service programme at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos. Being a committed
Scholar, Folake went back to school and bagged two Master’s degrees, in Law and
in Industrial and Labour Relations, from the Universities of Ife and Ibadan
respectively. On December 4, 1982, Folake got married to her heartrob, Wale
Okediran. The union is blessed with four daughters: Ebunoluwa, Oreoluwa,
Oluwaseun and Olutoyin.
She joined the services
of the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan, in 1983, and held many important
positions such as Acting Head of Department of Public and International Law,
Sub Dean, and later Acting Dean of the Faculty. Folake took an early retirement
in 2006 as a Senior Lecturer when she decided to move to the UK to supervise
her children’s education.
With the children’s
education completed in the UK, Folake eventually moved back to Nigeria. She
eventually joined the services of the Baze University, Abuja, as an Associate
Professor of Law in 2016. A few months into her appointment in Baze University,
Folake took ill and had to go back to the UK for treatment.
She eventually slept in
the Lord on Sunday, December 4, 2016, at the Queen’s Hospital, Romford, Essex,
UK, and was an active member of many professional and religious associations
both in Nigeria and the UK, left behind her husband, four children, a
granddaughter, brothers, cousins and a host of friends and professional
colleagues. Even though she is no more with us, our consolation is that she led
a good Christian life and was a devoted mother, faithful wife and dependable
friend.
